Daniel 5:23
5:23 Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. You brought before you the vessels from his temple, and you and your nobles, together with your wives and concubines, drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone – gods 6 that cannot see or hear or comprehend! But you have not glorified the God who has in his control 7 your very breath and all your ways!
1 tn Aram “[there were] discovered to be in him.”
2 tn Aram “wisdom like the wisdom.” This would be redundant in terms of English style.
3 tc Theodotion lacks the phrase “and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods.”
4 tc The MT includes a redundant reference to “your father the king” at the end of v. 11. None of the attempts to explain this phrase as original are very convincing. The present translation deletes the phrase, following Theodotion and the Syriac.
5 tn Aram “there has been found in you.”
6 tn Aram “which.”
7 tn Aram “in whose hand [are].”
