Nehemiah 8:9

8:9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priestly scribe, and the Levites who were imparting understanding to the people said to all of them, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping when they heard the words of the law.

Nehemiah 9:29

9:29 And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances – those by which an individual, if he obeys them, will live. They boldly turned from you; they rebelled and did not obey.

Nehemiah 10:28-29

10:28 “Now the rest of the people – the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple attendants, and all those who have separated themselves from the neighboring peoples because of the law of God, along with their wives, their sons, and their daughters, all of whom are able to understand – 10:29 hereby participate with their colleagues the town leaders and enter into a curse and an oath to adhere to 10  the law of God which was given through Moses the servant of God, and to obey 11  carefully all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, 12  along with his ordinances and his statutes.

Nehemiah 10:34

10:34 “We – the priests, the Levites, and the people – have cast lots concerning the wood offerings, to bring them to the temple of our God according to our families 13  at the designated times year by year to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as is written in the law.

Nehemiah 10:36

10:36 We also accept responsibility, as is written in the law, for bringing the firstborn of our sons and our cattle and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks to the temple of our God, to the priests who are ministering in the temple of our God.

Nehemiah 12:44

12:44 On that day men were appointed over the storerooms for the contributions, first fruits, and tithes, to gather into them from 14  the fields of the cities the portions prescribed by the law for the priests and the Levites, for the people of Judah 15  took delight in the priests and Levites who were ministering. 16

tc The unexpected reference to Nehemiah here has led some scholars to suspect that the phrase “Nehemiah the governor” is a later addition to the text and not original.

tn Heb “the priest, the scribe.”

tn Heb “the people.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy.

tn Heb “if a man keep.” See note on the word “obey” in Neh 1:5.

tn Heb “they gave a stubborn shoulder.”

tn Heb “they stiffened their neck.”

tn Heb “from the peoples of the lands.” Cf. vv. 30, 31.

tn Heb “the nobles.”

tn The expression “a curse and an oath” may be a hendiadys, meaning “an oath with penalties.”

10 tn Heb “to walk in.”

11 tn Heb “keep.” See the note on the word “obey” in Neh 1:5.

12 tn The Hebrew term translated “Lord” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

13 tn Heb “the house of our fathers.”

14 tc The translation reads מִשְּׂדֶי (missÿde, “from the fields”) rather than the MT reading לִשְׂדֵי (lisdey, “to the fields”).

15 tn Heb “for Judah.” The words “the people of” have been supplied in the translation for clarity, since “Judah” is a proper name as well as a place name.

16 tn Heb “standing.”
