23:15 “Woe to you, experts in the law 4 and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You cross land and sea to make one convert, 5 and when you get one, 6 you make him twice as much a child of hell 7 as yourselves!
1 tn The participle ὄντες (ontes) has been translated concessively.
2 sn The provision of the good gifts is probably a reference to the wisdom and guidance supplied in response to repeated requests. The teaching as a whole stresses not that we get everything we want, but that God gives the good that we need.
3 sn Jesus reassures his disciples with a promise that (1) much benefit in this life (a hundred times as much) and (2) eternal life will be given.
4 tn Or “scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.
5 tn Or “one proselyte.”
6 tn Grk “when he becomes [one].”
7 tn Grk “a son of Gehenna.” Expressions constructed with υἱός (Juios) followed by a genitive of class or kind denote a person belonging to the class or kind specified by the following genitive (L&N 9.4). Thus the phrase here means “a person who belongs to hell.”
sn See the note on the word hell in 5:22.
