¹ tn Grk “marveled.” It is a hard word to translate with one term in this context. There is a mixture of amazement and pondering at work in considering the surprising events here. See Luke 1:21, 63; 2:33.

² tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

³ sn There was wonder (all who heard…were astonished) that Jesus at such a young age could engage in such a discussion. The fact that this story is told of a preteen hints that Jesus was someone special.

⁴ tn Grk “And her.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

⁵ sn Jesus ordered them to tell no one because he desired that miracles not become the center of his ministry.
