Luke 2:12

2:12 This will be a sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.”

Luke 21:7

21:7 So they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that these things are about to take place?”

tn Grk “And this.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

sn The sign functions for the shepherds like Elizabeth’s conception served for Mary in 1:36.

tn Or “a feeding trough,” see Luke 2:7.

tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of Jesus’ comments about the temple’s future destruction.

tn Grk “asked him, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in English and has not been translated.

sn Both references to these things are plural, so more than the temple’s destruction is in view. The question may presuppose that such a catastrophe signals the end.

tn Grk “when.”
