Leviticus 1:5

1:5 Then the one presenting the offering¹ must slaughter the bull² before the Lord, and the sons of Aaron, the priests, must present the blood and splash³ the blood against the sides of the altar which is at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.

Leviticus 4:7

4:7 The priest must put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the Lord in the Meeting Tent, and all the rest of the bull’s blood he must pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.

Leviticus 16:14-15

16:14 Then he is to take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the eastern face of the atonement plate,⁴ and in front of the atonement plate he is to sprinkle some of the blood seven times with his finger.⁵

16:15 “He must then slaughter the sin offering goat which is for the people. He is to bring its blood inside the veil-canopy,⁶ and he is to do with its blood just as he did to the blood of the bull: He is to sprinkle it on the atonement plate and in front of the atonement plate.

Leviticus 16:18

16:18 “Then⁷ he is to go out to the altar which is before the Lord and make atonement for it. He is to take⁸ some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it all around on the horns of the altar.

Leviticus 16:27

16:27 The bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought to make atonement in the holy place, must be brought outside the camp⁹ and their hide, their flesh, and their dung must be burned up,¹⁰

Leviticus 23:18

23:18 Along with the loaves of bread,¹¹ you must also present seven flawless yearling lambs,¹² one young bull,¹³ and two rams.¹⁴ They are to be a burnt offering to the Lord along with their grain offering¹⁵ and drink offerings, a gift of a soothing aroma to the Lord.¹⁶

¹tn Heb “Then he”; the referent (the offerer) has been specified in the translation for clarity. The LXX has “they” rather than “he,” suggesting that the priests, not the offerer, were to slaughter the bull (cf. the notes on vv. 6a and 9a).

³tn “Splash” (cf. NAB) or “dash” (cf. NRSV) is better than “sprinkle,” which is the common English translation of this verb (זָרַק, zaraq; see, e.g., KJV, NASB, NIV, NLT). “Sprinkle” is not strong enough (contrast נָזָה [nazah], which does indeed mean “to sprinkle” or “to splatter”; cf. Lev 4:6).

⁴tn Heb “on the faces of the atonement plate toward the east.” Some have taken this to mean that the ark was stationed just behind the veil-canopy on the eastern side of the most holy place. Thus, the high priest would need to enter and walk toward the west end of the most holy place and then turn eastward in order to face the ark and sprinkle the blood in an eastward direction. The rendering here, however, requires that the ark was stationed on the western end, or perhaps in the middle of the area, so that as the priest entered he was already facing the ark and would sprinkle the blood on the eastern face of the atonement plate, in a westward direction (see, e.g., J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [WBC], 239 versus J. Milgrom, Leviticus [AB], 1:1032).
