Israel Conquers Jericho

5:13 When Joshua was near 1  Jericho, 2  he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him holding a drawn sword. 3  Joshua approached him and asked him, “Are you on our side or allied with our enemies?” 4 

Joshua 7:8

7:8 If only we had been satisfied to live on the other side of the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say now that Israel has retreated 5  before its enemies?

Joshua 7:12

7:12 The Israelites are unable to stand before their enemies; they retreat because they have become subject to annihilation. 6  I will no longer be with you, 7  unless you destroy what has contaminated you. 8 

Joshua 10:19

10:19 But don’t you delay! Chase your enemies and catch them! 9  Don’t allow them to retreat to 10  their cities, for the Lord your God is handing them over to you.” 11

10:25 Then Joshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid and don’t panic! 12  Be strong and brave, for the Lord will do the same thing to all your enemies you fight.

Joshua 22:8

22:8 saying, “Take home 13  great wealth, a lot of cattle, 14  silver, gold, bronze, iron, and a lot of 15  clothing. Divide up the goods captured from your enemies with your brothers.”

And look, a man was standing in front of him, and his sword was drawn in his hand.” The verb הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”) invites the reader to view the scene through Joshua’s eyes. By calling the stranger “a man,” the author reflects Joshua’s perspective. The text shortly reveals his true identity (vv. 14-15).
