Joshua 1:15

1:15 until the Lord gives your brothers a place like yours to settle and they conquer the land the Lord your God is ready to hand over to them. Then you may go back to your allotted land and occupy the land Moses the Lord’s servant assigned you east of the Jordan.”

Joshua 7:13

7:13 Get up! Ritually consecrate the people and tell them this: ‘Ritually consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the Lord God of Israel says, “You are contaminated, O Israel! You will not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove what is contaminating you.”

Joshua 9:24

9:24 They said to Joshua, “It was carefully reported to your subjects how the Lord your God commanded Moses his servant to assign you the whole land and to destroy all who live in the land from before you. Because of you we were terrified we would lose our lives, so we did this thing.

Joshua 22:4

Joshua 22:19

22:19 But if your own land is impure, 10  cross over to the Lord’s own land, 11  where the Lord himself lives, 12  and settle down among us. 13  But don’t rebel against the Lord or us 14  by building for yourselves an altar aside from the altar of the Lord our God.

Joshua 22:29

22:29 Far be it from us to rebel against the Lord by turning back today from following after the Lord by building an altar for burnt offerings, sacrifices, and tokens of peace 15  aside from the altar of the Lord our God located in front of his dwelling place!” 16

Joshua 23:14

23:14 “Look, today I am about to die. 17  You know with all your heart and being 18  that not even one of all the faithful promises the Lord your God made to you is left unfulfilled; every one was realized – not one promise is unfulfilled! 19

Joshua 23:16

23:16 If you violate the covenantal laws of the Lord your God which he commanded you to keep, 20  and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, 21  the Lord will be very angry with you and you will disappear 22  quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”

10 sn The western tribes here imagine a possible motive for the action of the eastern tribes. T. C. Butler explains the significance of the land’s “impurity”: “East Jordan is impure because it is not Yahweh’s possession. Rather it is simply ‘your possession.’ That means it is land where Yahweh does not live, land which his presence has not sanctified and purified” (Joshua [WBC], 247).

11 tn Heb “the land of the possession of the Lord.”

12 tn Heb “where the dwelling place of the Lord resides.”

sn The phrase where the Lord himself lives refers to the tabernacle.

13 tn Heb “and take for yourselves in our midst.”

14 tc Heb “and us to you rebel.” The reading of the MT, the accusative sign with suffix (וְאֹתָנוּ, vÿotanu), is problematic with the verb “rebel” (מָרַד, marad). Many Hebrew mss correctly read the negative particle אַל (’al) for the preposition אֶל (’el, “to”).

15 tn Or “peace offerings.”

16 sn The Lord’s dwelling place here refers to the tabernacle.

17 tn Heb “go the way of all the earth.”

18 tn Or “soul.”

19 tn Heb “one word from all these words which the Lord your God spoke to you has not fallen, the whole has come to pass for you, one word from it has not fallen.”

20 tn Heb “when you violate the covenant of the Lord your God which he commanded you.”

21 tn Heb “and you walk and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

22 tn Or “perish.”
