John 1:30

1:30 This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than I am, ¹  because he existed before me.’

John 1:50

¹ tn Or “has a higher rank than I.”

² tn Grk “answered and said to him.” This has been simplified in the translation to “said to him.”

³ sn What are the greater things Jesus had in mind? In the narrative this forms an excellent foreshadowing of the miraculous signs which began at Cana of Galilee.

⁴ tn Questions prefaced with μή (mh) in Greek anticipate a negative answer. This can sometimes be indicated by using a “tag” at the end in English (here the tag is “are you?”).
