Judges 6:14
6:14 Then the Lord himself 1 turned to him and said, “You have the strength. 2 Deliver Israel from the power of the Midianites! 3 Have I not sent you?”
Judges 8:22
Gideon Rejects a Crown but Makes an Ephod
8:22 The men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us – you, your son, and your grandson. For you have delivered us from Midian’s power.” 4
Judges 10:12
10:12 the Sidonians, Amalek, and Midian 5 when they oppressed you? 6 You cried out for help to me, and I delivered you from their power. 7
1 sn Some interpreters equate the Lord and the messenger in this story, but they are more likely distinct. In vv. 22-23 the Lord and Gideon continue to carry on a conversation after the messenger has vanished (v. 21).
2 tn Heb “Go in this strength of yours.”
3 tn Heb “the hand of Midian.”
4 tn Heb “hand.”
5 tc The translation follows the LXX which reads “Midian”; the Hebrew text has “Maon.”
6 tn The words “Did I not deliver you” are interpretive. The Hebrew text simply reads, “Is it not from Egypt…when they oppressed you?” Perhaps the incomplete sentence reflects the Lord’s frustration.
7 tn Heb “hand.”
