7:2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to hand Midian over to you. 4 Israel might brag, 5 ‘Our own strength has delivered us.’ 6
1 sn Some interpreters equate the Lord and the messenger in this story, but they are more likely distinct. In vv. 22-23 the Lord and Gideon continue to carry on a conversation after the messenger has vanished (v. 21).
2 tn Heb “Go in this strength of yours.”
3 tn Heb “the hand of Midian.”
4 tn Heb “the people who are with you are too numerous for me to give Midian into their hand.”
5 tn Heb “might glorify itself against me.”
