Judges 6:13
6:13 Gideon said to him, “Pardon me, 1 but if the Lord is with us, why has such disaster 2 overtaken us? Where are all his miraculous deeds our ancestors told us about? They said, 3 ‘Did the Lord not bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to Midian.”
Judges 9:48
9:48 He and all his men 4 went up on Mount Zalmon. He 5 took an ax 6 in his hand and cut off a tree branch. He put it 7 on his shoulder and said to his men, “Quickly, do what you have just seen me do!” 8
Judges 9:51
9:51 There was a fortified 9 tower 10 in the center of the city, so all the men and women, as well as the city’s leaders, ran into it and locked the entrance. Then they went up to the roof of the tower.
Judges 13:23
13:23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord wanted to kill us, he would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from us. 11 He would not have shown us all these things, or have spoken to us like this just now.”
Judges 14:3
14:3 But his father and mother said to him, “Certainly you can find a wife among your relatives or among all our 12 people! You should not have to go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines.” 13 But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, 14 because she is the right one for me.” 15
Judges 16:3
16:3 Samson spent half the night with the prostitute; then he got up in the middle of the night and left. 16 He grabbed the doors of the city gate, as well as the two posts, and pulled them right off, bar and all. 17 He put them on his shoulders and carried them up to the top of a hill east of Hebron. 18
Judges 16:17
16:17 Finally he told her his secret. 19 He said to her, “My hair has never been cut, 20 for I have been dedicated to God 21 from the time I was conceived. 22 If my head 23 were shaved, my strength would leave me; I would become weak, and be just like all other men.”
Judges 20:10
20:10 We will take ten of every group of a hundred men from all the tribes of Israel (and a hundred of every group of a thousand, and a thousand of every group of ten thousand) to get supplies for the army. 24 When they arrive in Gibeah of Benjamin they will punish them for the atrocity which they committed in Israel.” 25
Judges 20:45
20:45 The rest 26 turned and ran toward the wilderness, heading toward the cliff of Rimmon. But the Israelites 27 caught 28 five thousand of them on the main roads. They stayed right on their heels 29 all the way to Gidom and struck down two thousand more.
1 tn Heb “But my lord.”
2 tn Heb “all this.”
3 tn Heb “saying.”
4 tn Heb “his people.”
5 tn Heb “Abimelech.” The proper name has been replaced with the pronoun (“he”) due to considerations of English style.
6 tn The Hebrew text has the plural here.
7 tn Heb “he lifted it and put [it].”
8 tn Heb “What you have seen me do, quickly do like me.”
9 tn Or “strong.”
10 tn Or “fortress.” The same Hebrew term occurs once more in this verse and twice in v. 52.
11 tn Heb “our hand.”
12 tn Heb “my.” The singular may seem strange, since the introduction to the quotation attributes the words to his father and mother. But Samson’s father apparently speaks for both himself and his wife. However, the Lucianic recension of the LXX and the Syriac Peshitta have a second person pronoun here (“you”), and this may represent the original reading.
13 tn Heb “Is there not among the daughters of your brothers or among all my people a woman that you have to go to get a wife among the uncircumcised Philistines?”
14 tn “Her” is first in the Hebrew word order for emphasis. Samson wanted this Philistine girl, no one else. See C. F. Burney, Judges, 357.
15 tn Heb “because she is right in my eyes.”
16 tn Heb “And Samson lay until the middle of the night and arose in the middle of the night.”
17 tn Heb “with the bar.”
18 tn Heb “which is upon the face of Hebron.”
19 tn Heb “all his heart.”
20 tn Heb “a razor has not come upon my head.”
21 tn Or “set apart to God.” Traditionally the Hebrew term נָזִיר (nazir) has been translated “Nazirite.” The word is derived from the verb נָזַר (nazar, “to dedicate; to consecrate; to set apart”).
22 tn Heb “from the womb of my mother.”
23 tn Heb “I.” The referent has been made more specific in the translation (“my head”).
24 tn Or “people.”
25 tn Heb “to do at their arrival in Geba of Benjamin according to all the disgraceful [thing] which he [collective = “Benjamin”] did in Israel.” Here “Geba” must be an error for “Gibeah.”
26 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the rest [of the Benjaminites]) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
27 tn Heb “and they”; the referent (the Israelites) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
28 tn Heb “gleaned.” The word is an agricultural term which pictures Israelites picking off the Benjaminites as easily as one picks grapes from the vine.
29 tn Heb “stuck close after them.”
