Judah Takes the Lead

1:1 After Joshua died, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who should lead the invasion against the Canaanites and launch the attack?”

Judges 2:8

2:8 Joshua son of Nun, the Lord’s servant, died at the age of one hundred ten.

2:21 So I will no longer remove before them any of the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died.

tn The Hebrew verb translated “asked” (שָׁאַל, shaal) refers here to consulting the Lord through a prophetic oracle; cf. NAB “consulted.”

tn Heb “Who should first go up for us against the Canaanites to attack them?”

sn Baal-Berith was a local manifestation of the Canaanite storm god. The name means, ironically, “Baal of the covenant.” Israel’s covenant allegiance had indeed shifted.

tn Traditionally, “judged.”

tn Heb “Jephthah the Gileadite.” The proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“he”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

tc The Hebrew text has “in the cities of Gilead.” The present translation has support from some ancient Greek textual witnesses.
