James 1:21

1:21 So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls.

James 1:26

1:26 If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile.

James 3:4-5

3:4 Look at ships too: Though they are so large and driven by harsh winds, they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination directs. 3:5 So too the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has great pretensions. Think how small a flame sets a huge forest ablaze.

James 5:9

5:9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be judged. See, the judge stands before the gates!

tn Or “with meekness.”

tn Grk “a small member.”

tn Grk “boasts of great things.”

tn Grk “Behold.”

tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:2.

sn The term gates is used metaphorically here. The physical referent would be the entrances to the city, but the author uses the term to emphasize the imminence of the judge’s approach.
