Isaiah’s Commission

6:1 In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the sovereign master seated on a high, elevated throne. The hem of his robe filled the temple.

Isaiah 32:13

32:13 Mourn over the land of my people,

which is overgrown with thorns and briers,

and over all the once-happy houses

in the city filled with revelry.

Isaiah 66:11

66:11 For you will nurse from her satisfying breasts and be nourished;

you will feed with joy from her milk-filled breasts.


sn That is, approximately 740 b.c.

tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here and in vv. 8, 11 is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

tn “Mourn” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. In the Hebrew text vv. 12-13 are one long sentence.

tn Heb “indeed, over all the houses of joy.” It is not certain if this refers to individual homes or to places where parties and celebrations were held.

sn This same phrase is used in 22:2.

tn Or “in order that”; ASV, NRSV “that.”

tn Heb “you will suck and be satisfied, from her comforting breast.”

tn Heb “you will slurp and refresh yourselves from her heavy breast.”
