33:14 Sinners are afraid in Zion;
panic 1 grips the godless. 2
They say, 3 ‘Who among us can coexist with destructive fire?
Who among us can coexist with unquenchable 4 fire?’
64:2 (64:1) As when fire ignites dry wood,
or fire makes water boil,
let your adversaries know who you are, 5
and may the nations shake at your presence!
1 tn Or “trembling” (ASV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV); NLT “shake with fear.”
2 tn Or “the defiled”; TEV “The sinful people of Zion”; NLT “The sinners in Jerusalem.”
3 tn The words “they say” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
4 tn Or “perpetual”; or “everlasting” (KJV, ASV, NAB, NIV, NRSV).
5 tn Heb “to make known your name to your adversaries.” Perhaps the infinitive construct with preposition -לְ (lamed) should be construed with “come down” in v. 1a, or subordinated to the following line: “To make known your name to your adversaries, let the nations shake from before you.”
