Isaiah 33:14

33:14 Sinners are afraid in Zion;

panic grips the godless.

They say, ‘Who among us can coexist with destructive fire?

Who among us can coexist with unquenchable fire?’

Isaiah 64:2

64:2 (64:1) As when fire ignites dry wood,

or fire makes water boil,

let your adversaries know who you are,

and may the nations shake at your presence!

tn Or “trembling” (ASV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV); NLT “shake with fear.”

tn Or “the defiled”; TEV “The sinful people of Zion”; NLT “The sinners in Jerusalem.”

tn The words “they say” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

tn Or “perpetual”; or “everlasting” (KJV, ASV, NAB, NIV, NRSV).

tn Heb “to make known your name to your adversaries.” Perhaps the infinitive construct with preposition -לְ (lamed) should be construed with “come down” in v. 1a, or subordinated to the following line: “To make known your name to your adversaries, let the nations shake from before you.”
