Isaiah 17:4

17:4 “At that time

Jacob’s splendor will be greatly diminished,

and he will become skin and bones.

Isaiah 29:2

29:2 I will threaten Ariel,

and she will mourn intensely

and become like an altar hearth before me.

Isaiah 34:9

34:9 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch

and her soil into brimstone;

her land will become burning pitch.

tn Heb “in that day” (so KJV). The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

tn Heb “will be tiny.”

tn Heb “and the fatness of his flesh will be made lean.”

tn The term אֲרִיאֵל (’ariel, “Ariel”) is the word translated “altar hearth” here. The point of the simile is not entirely clear. Perhaps the image likens Jerusalem’s coming crisis to a sacrificial fire.

tn Heb “her”; the referent (Edom) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
