Isaiah 1:24

1:24 Therefore, the sovereign Lord who commands armies, 1 

the powerful ruler of Israel, 2  says this:

“Ah, I will seek vengeance 3  against my adversaries,

I will take revenge against my enemies. 4 

Isaiah 36:10

36:10 Furthermore it was by the command of the Lord that I marched up against this land to destroy it. The Lord told me, ‘March up against this land and destroy it!’”’” 5 

Isaiah 48:14

48:14 All of you, gather together and listen!

Who among them 6  announced these things?

The Lord’s ally 7  will carry out his desire against Babylon;

he will exert his power against the Babylonians. 8 

1 tn Heb “the master, the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts].” On the title “the Lord who commands armies,” see the note at v. 9.

2 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Israel.”

3 tn Heb “console myself” (i.e., by getting revenge); NRSV “pour out my wrath on.”

4 sn The Lord here identifies with the oppressed and comes as their defender and vindicator.

5 sn In v. 10 the chief adviser develops further the argument begun in v. 7. He claims that Hezekiah has offended the Lord and that the Lord has commissioned Assyria as his instrument of discipline and judgment.

6 sn This probably refers to the idol gods (see v. 5).

7 tn Or “friend,” or “covenant partner.”

sn The Lord’s ally is a reference to Cyrus.
