40:8 They told him, “We both had dreams, 3  but there is no one to interpret them.” Joseph responded, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell them 4  to me.”

Genesis 41:25-26

41:25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Both dreams of Pharaoh have the same meaning. 5  God has revealed 6  to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 7  41:26 The seven good cows represent seven years, and the seven good heads of grain represent seven years. Both dreams have the same meaning. 8 

1 tn The verb שָׁכַב (shakhav) means “to lie down, to recline,” that is, “to go to bed.” Here what appears to be an imperfect is a preterite after the adverb טֶרֶם (terem). The nuance of potential (perfect) fits well.

2 tn Heb “and the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from the young to the old, all the people from the end [of the city].” The repetition of the phrase “men of” stresses all kinds of men.

3 tn Heb “a dream we dreamed.”

4 tn The word “them” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

5 tn Heb “the dream of Pharaoh is one.”

6 tn Heb “declared.”

7 tn The active participle here indicates what is imminent.

8 tn Heb “one dream it is.”
