27:38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only that one blessing, my father? Bless me too!” ¹  Then Esau wept loudly. ² 

Genesis 42:24

42:24 He turned away from them and wept. When he turned around and spoke to them again, ³  he had Simeon taken ⁴  from them and tied up ⁵  before their eyes.

¹ tn Heb “Bless me, me also, my father.” The words “my father” have not been repeated in the translation for stylistic reasons.

² tn Heb “and Esau lifted his voice and wept.”

³ tn Heb “and he turned to them and spoke to them.”

⁴ tn Heb “took Simeon.” This was probably done at Joseph’s command, however; the grand vizier of Egypt would not have personally seized a prisoner.

⁵ tn Heb “and he bound him.” See the note on the preceding verb “taken.”

⁶ tn Heb “for his affection boiled up concerning his brother.” The same expression is used in 1 Kgs 3:26 for the mother’s feelings for her endangered child.

⁷ tn Heb “and he sought to weep.”
