The Family of Jacob goes to Egypt

46:1 So Israel began his journey, taking with him all that he had. When he came to Beer Sheba he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

tn Heb “on/in the seventh day.”

tn Heb “his work which he did [or “made”].”

tn The Hebrew term שָׁבַּת (shabbat) can be translated “to rest” (“and he rested”) but it basically means “to cease.” This is not a rest from exhaustion; it is the cessation of the work of creation.

tn Heb “and he turned to them and spoke to them.”

tn Heb “took Simeon.” This was probably done at Joseph’s command, however; the grand vizier of Egypt would not have personally seized a prisoner.

tn Heb “and he bound him.” See the note on the preceding verb “taken.”

tn Heb “concerning peace.”

tn Heb “and Israel journeyed, and all that was his.”

sn Beer Sheba. See Gen 21:31; 28:10.
