Genesis 2:2

2:2 By ¹  the seventh day God finished the work that he had been doing, ²  and he ceased ³  on the seventh day all the work that he had been doing.

Genesis 39:10

39:10 Even though she continued to speak ⁴  to Joseph day after day, he did not respond ⁵  to her invitation to have sex with her. ⁶

² tn Heb “his work which he did [or “made”].”

³ tn The Hebrew term שָׁבַּת (shabbat) can be translated “to rest” (“and he rested”) but it basically means “to cease.” This is not a rest from exhaustion; it is the cessation of the work of creation.

⁴ tn The verse begins with the temporal indicator, followed by the infinitive construct with the preposition כְּ (kÿ). This clause could therefore be taken as temporal.

⁵ tn Heb “listen to.”

⁶ tn Heb “to lie beside her to be with her.” Here the expression “to lie beside” is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.
