Genesis 12:6

12:6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the oak tree ¹  of Moreh ²  at Shechem. ³  (At that time the Canaanites were in the land.) ⁴ 

Genesis 14:15

14:15 Then, during the night, ⁵  Abram ⁶  divided his forces ⁷  against them and defeated them. He chased them as far as Hobah, which is north ⁸  of Damascus.

Genesis 44:7

44:7 They answered him, “Why does my lord say such things? ⁹  Far be it from your servants to do such a thing! ¹⁰

¹ tn Or “terebinth.”

² sn The Hebrew word Moreh (מוֹרֶה, moreh) means “teacher.” It may well be that the place of this great oak tree was a Canaanite shrine where instruction took place.

³ tn Heb “as far as the place of Shechem, as far as the oak of Moreh.”

⁴ tn The disjunctive clause gives important information parenthetical in nature – the promised land was occupied by Canaanites.

⁵ tn The Hebrew text simply has “night” as an adverbial accusative.

⁶ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Abram) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

⁷ tn Heb “he divided himself…he and his servants.”

⁸ tn Heb “left.” Directions in ancient Israel were given in relation to the east rather than the north.

⁹ tn Heb “Why does my lord speak according to these words?”

¹⁰ tn Heb “according to this thing.”
