Ezekiel 6:9
6:9 Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are exiled. They will realize 1 how I was crushed by their unfaithful 2 heart which turned from me and by their eyes which lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves 3 because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.
Ezekiel 14:4
14:4 Therefore speak to them and say to them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: When any one from the house of Israel erects his idols in his heart and sets the obstacle leading to his iniquity before his face, and then consults a prophet, I the Lord am determined to answer him personally according to the enormity of his idolatry. 4
Ezekiel 14:7
14:7 For when anyone from the house of Israel, or the foreigner who lives in Israel, separates himself from me and erects his idols in his heart and sets the obstacle leading to his iniquity before his face, and then consults a prophet to seek something from me, I the Lord am determined to answer him personally.
Ezekiel 21:7
21:7 When they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you will reply, ‘Because of the report that has come. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand will be limp; everyone 5 will faint and every knee will be wet with urine.’ 6 Pay attention – it is coming and it will happen, declares the sovereign Lord.”
Ezekiel 27:27
27:27 Your wealth, products, and merchandise, your sailors and captains,
your ship’s carpenters, 7 your merchants,
and all your fighting men within you,
along with all your crew who are in you,
will fall into the heart of the seas on the day of your downfall.
1 tn The words “they will realize” are not in the Hebrew text; they are added here for stylistic reasons since this clause assumes the previous verb “to remember” or “to take into account.”
2 tn Heb “how I was broken by their adulterous heart.” The image of God being “broken” is startling, but perfectly natural within the metaphorical framework of God as offended husband. The idiom must refer to the intense grief that Israel’s unfaithfulness caused God. For a discussion of the syntax and semantics of the Hebrew text, see M. Greenberg, Ezekiel (AB), 1:134.
3 tn Heb adds “in their faces.”
4 tn Heb “in accordance with the multitude of his idols.”
5 tn Heb “every spirit will be dim.”
6 sn This expression depicts in a very vivid way how they will be overcome with fear. See the note on the same phrase in 7:17.
7 tn Heb “your repairers of damage.” See v. 9.
