Deuteronomy 7:8

7:8 Rather it is because of his love for you and his faithfulness to the promise he solemnly vowed to your ancestors that the Lord brought you out with great power, redeeming you from the place of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Deuteronomy 12:11

12:11 Then you must come to the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to reside, bringing everything I am commanding you – your burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, the personal offerings you have prepared, 10  and all your choice votive offerings which you devote to him. 11

Deuteronomy 12:21

12:21 If the place he 12  chooses to locate his name is too far for you, you may slaughter any of your herd and flock he 13  has given you just as I have stipulated; you may eat them in your villages 14  just as you wish.

Deuteronomy 13:5

13:5 As for that prophet or dreamer, 15  he must be executed because he encouraged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, redeeming you from that place of slavery, and because he has tried to entice you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to go. In this way you must purge out evil from within. 16

Deuteronomy 14:23

14:23 In the presence of the Lord your God you must eat from the tithe of your grain, your new wine, 17  your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the place he chooses to locate his name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always.

Deuteronomy 16:11

16:11 You shall rejoice before him 18  – you, your son, your daughter, your male and female slaves, the Levites in your villages, 19  the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows among you – in the place where the Lord chooses to locate his name.

Deuteronomy 16:16

16:16 Three times a year all your males must appear before the Lord your God in the place he chooses for the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks, and the Festival of Temporary Shelters; and they must not appear before him 20  empty-handed.

tn Heb “the Lord’s.” See note on “He” in 7:6.

tn For the verb אָהַב (’ahav, “to love”) as a term of choice or election, see note on the word “loved” in Deut 4:37.

tn Heb “oath.” This is a reference to the promises of the so-called “Abrahamic Covenant” (cf. Gen 15:13-16).

tn Heb “swore on oath.”

tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 12, 13).

tn Heb “by a strong hand” (NAB similar); NLT “with such amazing power.”

sn Redeeming you from the place of slavery. The Hebrew verb translated “redeeming” (from the root פָּדָה, padah) has the idea of redemption by the payment of a ransom. The initial symbol of this was the Passover lamb, offered by Israel to the Lord as ransom in exchange for deliverance from bondage and death (Exod 12:1-14). Later, the firstborn sons of Israel, represented by the Levites, became the ransom (Num 3:11-13). These were all types of the redemption effected by the death of Christ who described his atoning work as “a ransom for many” (Matt 20:28; cf. 1 Pet 1:18).

tn Heb “hand” (so KJV, NRSV), a metaphor for power or domination.

tn Heb “and it will be (to) the place where the Lord your God chooses to cause his name to dwell you will bring.”

10 tn Heb “heave offerings of your hand.”

11 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 12:5.

12 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 12:5.

13 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 12:5.

14 tn Heb “gates” (so KJV, NASB); NAB “in your own community.”

15 tn Heb “or dreamer of dreams.” See note on this expression in v. 1.

16 tn Heb “your midst” (so NAB, NRSV). The severity of the judgment here (i.e., capital punishment) is because of the severity of the sin, namely, high treason against the Great King. Idolatry is a violation of the first two commandments (Deut 5:6-10) as well as the spirit and intent of the Shema (Deut 6:4-5).

17 tn This refers to wine in the early stages of fermentation. In its later stages it becomes wine (יַיִן, yayin) in its mature sense.

18 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 16:1.

19 tn Heb “gates.”

20 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 16:1.
