Deuteronomy 15:11

15:11 There will never cease to be some poor people in the land; therefore, I am commanding you to make sure you open your hand to your fellow Israelites who are needy and poor in your land.

Deuteronomy 17:15

17:15 you must select without fail a king whom the Lord your God chooses. From among your fellow citizens you must appoint a king – you may not designate a foreigner who is not one of your fellow Israelites. 10

34:9 Now Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had placed his hands on him; 21  and the Israelites listened to him and did just what the Lord had commanded Moses.

tn Heb “in” or “on.” Here there is a contrast between the ordinary time of eleven days (v. 2) and the actual time of forty years, so “not until” brings out that vast disparity.

sn The eleventh month is Shebat in the Hebrew calendar, January/February in the modern (Gregorian) calendar.

sn The fortieth year would be 1406 b.c. according to the “early” date of the exodus. See E. H. Merrill, Kingdom of Priests, 66-75.

tn Heb “according to all which.”

tn Heb “your brothers, the sons of Israel.”

tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “make sure.”

tn Heb “your brother.”

tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, indicated in the translation by the words “without fail.”

tn Heb “your brothers,” but not referring to siblings (cf. NIV “your brother Israelites”; NLT “a fellow Israelite”). The same phrase also occurs in v. 20.

10 tn Heb “your brothers.” See the preceding note on “fellow citizens.”

11 tn Heb “from his brothers, from the sons of Israel.” The terms “brothers” and “sons of Israel” are in apposition; the second defines the first more specifically.

12 tn Or “and enslaves him.”

13 tn Heb “that thief.”

14 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the word “purge” in Deut 19:19.

15 tn Heb “your brothers,” but not limited only to actual siblings; cf. NASB “your (+ own NAB) countrymen.”

16 tn Heb “who are in your land in your gates.” The word “living” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

17 tn Heb “he.” Since the pronoun could be taken to refer to Moses, the referent has been specified as “the Lord” in the translation for clarity. See also the note on the word “you” later in this verse.

18 tc The LXX reads, “as the Lord promised them, and he will be with you.” This relieves the problem of Moses apparently promising to be with Joshua as the MT reads on the surface (“I will be with you”). However, the reading of the LXX is clearly an attempt to clarify an existing obscurity and therefore is unlikely to reflect the original.

19 sn Abarim. This refers to the high plateau region of the Transjordan, the highest elevation of which is Mount Pisgah (or Nebo; cf. Deut 34:1). See also the note on the name “Pisgah” in Deut 3:17.

21 sn See Num 27:18.
