1:11 Indeed, may the Lord, the God of your ancestors, make you a thousand times more numerous than you are now, blessing you ¹  just as he said he would!

33:20 Of Gad he said:

Blessed be the one who enlarges Gad.

Like a lioness he will dwell;

33:28 Israel lives in safety,

the fountain of Jacob is quite secure, ⁷ 

in a land of grain and new wine;

² tn Heb “from the middle of.” Although many recent English versions leave this expression untranslated, the point seems to be that these soldiers did not die in battle but “within the camp.”

³ tn Or “mind and being.” See Deut 6:5.

⁴ tc Theodotian adds “in Israel,” perhaps to broaden the matter beyond the local village.

⁵ tn Heb “gates.”

⁶ tn Heb “forehead,” picturing Gad attacking prey.

⁷ tn Heb “all alone.” The idea is that such vital resources as water will some day no longer need protection because God will provide security.

⁸ tn Or “skies.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.
