Daniel 2:40

2:40 Then there will be a fourth kingdom, one strong like iron. Just like iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything, and as iron breaks in pieces all of these metals, so it will break in pieces and crush the others.

Daniel 4:31

4:31 While these words were still on the king’s lips, a voice came down from heaven: “It is hereby announced to you, King Nebuchadnezzar, that your kingdom has been removed from you!

Daniel 6:3

6:3 Now this Daniel was distinguishing himself above the other supervisors and the satraps, for he had an extraordinary spirit. In fact, the king intended to appoint him over the entire kingdom.

Daniel 7:14

7:14 To him was given ruling authority, honor, and sovereignty.

All peoples, nations, and language groups were serving him.

His kingdom will not be destroyed.

Daniel 7:22-24

7:22 until the Ancient of Days arrived and judgment was rendered in favor of the holy ones of the Most High. Then the time came for the holy ones to take possession of the kingdom.

7:23 “This is what he told me: 10

‘The fourth beast means that there will be a fourth kingdom on earth

that will differ from all the other kingdoms.

It will devour all the earth

and will trample and crush it.

7:24 The ten horns

mean that ten kings will arise from that kingdom.

Another king will arise after them,

but he will be different from the earlier ones.

He will humiliate 11  three kings.

Daniel 10:13

Daniel 11:20-21

11:20 There will arise after him 14  one 15  who will send out an exactor 16  of tribute to enhance the splendor of the kingdom, but after a few days he will be destroyed, 17  though not in anger or battle.

11:21 “Then there will arise in his place a despicable person 18  to whom the royal honor has not been rightfully conferred. He will come on the scene in a time of prosperity and will seize the kingdom through deceit.

tc Theodotion and the Vulgate lack the phrase “and as iron breaks in pieces.”

tn The Aramaic text does not have this word, but it has been added in the translation for clarity.

tn The words “the others” are supplied from the context.

tn Aram “in the mouth of the king.”

tn Aram “to you they say.”

tn Some take “serving” here in the sense of “worshiping.”

tn Aram “is an eternal authority which will not pass away.”

tn Aram “is one which will not be destroyed.”

tc In the LXX, Syriac, and Vulgate the verb is active, understanding “judgment” to be the object rather than the subject of the verb (i.e., “the Ancient of Days rendered judgment”). This presupposes a different vocalization of the verb ( יְהַב [yÿhav] rather than the MT יְהִב [yÿhiv]).

10 tn Aram “thus he said.”

11 tn Or “subjugate”; KJV, NASB, NIV “subdue”; ASV, NRSV “put down.”

12 tn Heb “and behold.”

13 tc The Greek version of Theodotion reads “I left him [i.e., Michael] there,” and this is followed by a number of English translations (cf. NAB, NRSV, NLT).

14 tn Heb “on his place.”

15 sn The one who will send out an exactor of tribute was Seleucus IV Philopator (ca. 187-176 B.C.).

16 sn Perhaps this exactor of tribute was Heliodorus (cf. 2 Maccabees 3).

17 tn Heb “broken” or “shattered.”

18 sn This despicable person to whom the royal honor has not been rightfully conferred is Antiochus IV Epiphanes (ca. 175-164 B.C.).
