Acts 7:40

7:40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go in front of us, for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt ¹  – we do not know what has happened to him!’ ² 

Acts 12:6

12:6 On that very night before Herod was going to bring him out for trial, ³  Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, while ⁴  guards in front of the door were keeping watch ⁵  over the prison.

Acts 18:17

18:17 So they all seized Sosthenes, the president of the synagogue, ⁶  and began to beat ⁷  him in front of the judgment seat. ⁸  Yet none of these things were of any concern ⁹  to Gallio.

Acts 19:33

19:33 Some of the crowd concluded ¹⁰  it was about ¹¹  Alexander because the Jews had pushed him to the front. ¹²  Alexander, gesturing ¹³  with his hand, was wanting to make a defense ¹⁴  before the public assembly. ¹⁵

¹ tn Or simply “of Egypt.” The phrase “the land of” could be omitted as unnecessary or redundant.

² sn A quotation from Exod 32:1, 23. Doubt (we do not know what has happened to him) expresses itself in unfaithful action. The act is in contrast to God’s promise in Exod 23:20.

³ tn Grk “was going to bring him out,” but the upcoming trial is implied. See Acts 12:4.

⁴ tn Grk “two chains, and.” Logically it makes better sense to translate this as a temporal clause, although technically it is a coordinate clause in Greek.

⁵ tn Or “were guarding.”

⁶ tn That is, “the official in charge of the synagogue”; ἀρχισυνάγωγος (arcisunagwgo") refers to the “leader/president of a synagogue” (so BDAG 139 s.v. and L&N 53.93).

sn Rome was officially indifferent to such disputes. Gallio understood how sensitive some Jews would be about his meddling in their affairs. This is similar to the way Pilate dealt with Jesus. In the end, he let the Jewish leadership and people make the judgment against Jesus.

¹¹ tn The words “it was about” are not in the Greek text but are implied; ᾿Αλέξανδρον (Alexandron) is taken to be an accusative of general reference.
