18:29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and then enter ¹  the battle; but you wear your royal attire.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and they entered the battle.

2 Chronicles 23:7

23:7 The Levites must surround the king. Each of you must hold his weapon in his hand. Whoever tries to enter the temple ²  must be killed. You must accompany the king wherever he goes.” ³ 

2 Chronicles 27:2

27:2 He did what the Lord approved, just as his father Uzziah had done. ⁴  (He did not, however, have the audacity to enter the temple.) ⁵  Yet the people were still sinning.

¹ tn The Hebrew verbal forms could be imperatives (“Disguise yourself and enter”), but this would make no sense in light of the immediately following context. The forms are better interpreted as infinitives absolute functioning as cohortatives (see IBHS 594 §35.5.2a). Some prefer to emend the forms to imperfects.

² tn Heb “house.”

³ tn Heb “and be with the king in his coming out and in his going out.”

⁴ tn Heb “he did what was proper in the eyes of the Lord, according to all which Uzziah his father had done.”

⁵ tn Heb “except he did not enter the house of the Lord.”
