tn Heb “and they brought up and brought out from Egypt a chariot for 600 silver (pieces), and a horse for 150, and in the same way to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of Aram by their hand they brought out.”

tn Heb “they could not be seen outside.”

tn Or “are struck down before an enemy.”

tn Heb “confess [or perhaps, “praise”] your name.”

tn Heb “and they pray and ask for help.”

tn Heb “they”; the referent (God’s people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Or “stop and reflect”; Heb “bring back to their heart.”

tn Or “done wrong.”

tn Heb “the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying.”

10 tn Heb “and I will give to them soon deliverance.”

11 tn Or “gush forth upon.”

12 tn Heb “by the hand of.”

13 tn Heb “and Judah turned, and, look, to them [was] the battle in front and behind.”

14 tn Heb “for the terror of the Lord was upon them.”

15 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the men of Judah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

16 tn Heb “for great plunder was in them.”

17 tn Heb “and with all their desire they sought him and he allowed himself to be found by them.”

18 tn Heb “and the Lord gave them rest all around.”

19 sn The phrase the City of David refers here to the fortress of Zion in Jerusalem, not to Bethlehem. See 2 Sam 5:7.

20 tn Heb “and they burned for him a large fire, very great.”

21 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Micaiah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

22 tn Or “consulted.”

23 tn Or “is eternal.”

24 tn Heb “for there.”

25 sn The name Berachah, which means “blessing” in Hebrew, is derived from the verbal root “to praise [or “to bless”],” which appears earlier in the verse.

26 tn The Hebrew word עֵדוּת (’edut) normally means “witness” or “testimony.” Here it probably refers to some tangible symbol of kingship, perhaps a piece of jewelry such as an amulet or neck chain (see the discussion in M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings [AB], 128). Some suggest that a document is in view, perhaps a copy of the royal protocol or of the stipulations of the Davidic covenant (see HALOT 790-91 s.v.).

27 tn Or “they made him king and anointed him.”

28 tn Heb “turning.”

29 tn Heb “went up against.”

36 tn Heb “words” (plural).

37 tn Heb “in the temple of the Lord.”

38 tn Or “burned incense.”

39 tn Heb “angering me with all the work of their hands.” The present translation assumes this refers to idols they have manufactured (note the preceding reference to “other gods”). However, it is possible that this is a general reference to their sinful practices, in which case one might translate, “angering me by all the things they do.”
