9:6 “But if you or your sons ever turn away from me, fail to obey the regulations and rules I instructed you to keep,¹ and decide to serve and worship other gods,²

1 Kings 9:9

9:9 Others will then answer,³ ‘Because they abandoned the Lord their God, who led their ancestors⁴ out of Egypt. They embraced other gods whom they worshiped and served.⁵ That is why the Lord has brought all this disaster down on them.’”

1 Kings 11:2

11:2 They came from nations about which the Lord had warned the Israelites, “You must not establish friendly relations with them!⁶ If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods.”⁷ But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them.⁸

1 Kings 19:2

19:2 Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this warning,⁹ “May the gods judge me severely¹⁰ if by this time tomorrow I do not take your life as you did theirs!”¹¹

1 Kings 20:10

20:10 Ben Hadad sent another message to him, “May the gods judge me severely¹² if there is enough dirt left in Samaria for my soldiers to scoop up in their hands.”¹³

⁸tn Heb “Solomon clung to them for love.” The pronominal suffix, translated “them,” is masculine here, even though it appears the foreign women are in view. Perhaps this is due to attraction to the masculine forms used of the nations earlier in the verse.
