The Building of the Temple

6:1 In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites left Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, during the month Ziv ¹  (the second month), he began building the Lord’s temple.

1 Kings 8:5

8:5 Now King Solomon and all the Israelites who had assembled with him went on ahead of the ark and sacrificed more sheep and cattle than could be counted or numbered. ² 

1 Kings 8:9

8:9 There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed there in Horeb. ³  It was there that ⁴  the Lord made an agreement with the Israelites after he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

1 Kings 8:63

8:63 Solomon offered as peace offerings ⁵  to the Lord 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep. Then the king and all the Israelites dedicated the Lord’s temple.

1 Kings 9:21

9:21 Their descendants remained in the land (the Israelites were unable to wipe them out completely). Solomon conscripted them for his work crews, and they continue in that role to this very day. ⁶ 

1 Kings 11:2

11:2 They came from nations about which the Lord had warned the Israelites, “You must not establish friendly relations with them! ⁷  If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods.” ⁸  But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them. ⁹ 

1 Kings 20:29

20:29 The armies were deployed opposite each other for seven days. On the seventh day the battle began, and the Israelites killed 100,000 Syrian foot soldiers in one day.

⁸ tn Heb “Surely they will bend your heart after their gods.” The words “if you do” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

⁹ tn Heb “Solomon clung to them for love.” The pronominal suffix, translated “them,” is masculine here, even though it appears the foreign women are in view. Perhaps this is due to attraction to the masculine forms used of the nations earlier in the verse.
