1 Kings 13:24-25
13:24 As the prophet from Judah was traveling, a lion attacked him on the road and killed him. 1 His corpse was lying on the road, and the donkey and the lion just stood there beside it. 2
13:25 Some men came by 3 and saw the corpse lying in the road with the lion standing beside it. 4 They went and reported what they had seen 5 in the city where the old prophet lived.
1 Kings 13:28
13:28 He went and found the corpse lying in the road with the donkey and the lion standing beside it; 6 the lion had neither eaten the corpse nor attacked the donkey.
1 Kings 22:22
22:22 He replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ The Lord 7 said, ‘Deceive and overpower him. 8 Go out and do as you have proposed.’
1 tn Heb “and he went and a lion met him in the road and killed him.”
2 tn Heb “and his corpse fell on the road, and the donkey was standing beside it, and the lion was standing beside the corpse.”
3 tn Heb “Look, men were passing by.”
4 tn Heb “the corpse.” The noun has been replaced by the pronoun (“it”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.
5 tn The words “what they had seen” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
6 tn Heb “the corpse.” The noun has been replaced by the pronoun (“it”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.
7 tn Heb “he”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
8 tn The Hebrew text has two imperfects connected by וְגַם (vÿgam). These verbs could be translated as specific futures, “you will deceive and also you will prevail,” in which case the Lord is assuring the spirit of success on his mission. However, in a commissioning context (note the following imperatives) such as this, it is more likely that the imperfects are injunctive, in which case one could translate, “Deceive, and also overpower.”
