Reuben’s Descendants

5:1 The sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn –

(Now he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph, Israel’s son. So Reuben is not listed as firstborn in the genealogical records.

1 Chronicles 11:23

11:23 He even killed an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. The Egyptian had a spear as big as the crossbeam of a weaver’s loom; Benaiah attacked him with a club. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.

1 Chronicles 12:19

12:19 Some men from Manasseh joined David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (But in the end they did not help the Philistines because, after taking counsel, the Philistine lords sent David away, saying: “It would be disastrous for us if he deserts to his master Saul.”)

1 Chronicles 18:10

18:10 he sent his son Hadoram to King David to extend his best wishes and to pronounce a blessing on him for his victory over Hadadezer, for Tou had been at war with Hadadezer. He also sent various items made of gold, silver, and bronze. 10

1 Chronicles 21:15

21:15 God sent an angel 11  to ravage 12  Jerusalem. As he was doing so, 13  the Lord watched 14  and relented from 15  his judgment. 16  He told the angel who was destroying, “That’s enough! 17  Stop now!” 18

Now the Lord’s angel was standing near the threshing floor of Ornan 19  the Jebusite.

1 Chronicles 28:4

28:4 The Lord God of Israel chose me out of my father’s entire family to become king over Israel and have a permanent dynasty. 20  Indeed, 21  he chose Judah as leader, and my father’s family within Judah, and then he picked me out from among my father’s sons and made me king over all Israel. 22

1 Chronicles 28:9

28:9 “And you, Solomon my son, obey 23  the God of your father and serve him with a submissive attitude and a willing spirit, 24  for the Lord examines all minds and understands every motive of one’s thoughts. If you seek him, he will let you find him, 25  but if you abandon him, he will reject you permanently.

sn The phrase when he defiled his father’s bed refers to Reuben having sexual relations with his father Jacob’s concubine Bilhah. This incident is recorded in Gen 35:22.

tn Heb “and not to be listed in the genealogical records as (having) the right of the firstborn.”

13 tn Heb “while he was destroying.”

14 tn Or “saw.”

15 tn Or “was grieved because of.”

19 tn In the parallel text in 2 Sam 24:16 this individual is called אֲרַוְנָא (’aravna’, “Aravna”), traditionally “Araunah.” The form of the name found here also occurs in vv. 18-28.

20 tn Heb “out of all the house of my father to become king over all Israel permanently.”
