Esther 3:4

Context
NET ©

And after they had spoken to him day after day 1  without his paying any attention to them, they informed Haman to see whether this attitude on Mordecai’s part would be permitted. 2  Furthermore, he had disclosed to them that he was a Jew. 3

NIV ©

Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply. Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai’s behaviour would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.

NASB ©

Now it was when they had spoken daily to him and he would not listen to them, that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.

NLT ©

They spoke to him day after day, but still he refused to comply with the order. So they spoke to Haman about this to see if he would tolerate Mordecai’s conduct, since Mordecai had told them he was a Jew.

MSG ©

Day after day they spoke to him about this but he wouldn't listen, so they went to Haman to see whether something shouldn't be done about it. Mordecai had told them that he was a Jew.

BBE ©

Now when they had said this to him day after day and he gave no attention, they let Haman have news of it, to see if Mordecai’s behaviour would be overlooked: for he had said to them that he was a Jew.

NRSV ©

When they spoke to him day after day and he would not listen to them, they told Haman, in order to see whether Mordecai’s words would avail; for he had told them that he was a Jew.

NKJV ©

Now it happened, when they spoke to him daily and he would not listen to them, that they told it to Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s words would stand; for Mordecai had told them that he was a Jew.

NET © Notes

sn Mordecai’s position in the service of the king brought him into regular contact with these royal officials. Because of this association the officials would have found ample opportunity to complain of Mordecai’s refusal to honor Haman by bowing down before him.

tn Heb “Will the matters of Mordecai stand?”; NASB “to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand.”

sn This disclosure of Jewish identity is a reversal of the practice mentioned in 1:10, 20.
