Context
NET ©

This is how the once-proud city will end up 1  – the city that was so secure. 2  She thought to herself, 3  “I am unique! No one can compare to me!” 4  What a heap of ruins she has become, a place where wild animals live! Everyone who passes by her taunts her 5  and shakes his fist. 6

NIV ©

This is the carefree city that lived in safety. She said to herself, "I am, and there is none besides me." What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts! All who pass by her scoff and shake their fists.

NASB ©

This is the exultant city Which dwells securely, Who says in her heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me." How she has become a desolation, A resting place for beasts! Everyone who passes by her will hiss And wave his hand in contempt.

NLT ©

This is the fate of that boisterous city, once so secure. "In all the world there is no city as great as I," it boasted. But now, look how it has become an utter ruin, a place where animals live! Everyone passing that way will laugh in derision or shake a defiant fist.

MSG ©

Can this be the famous Fun City that had it made, That boasted, "I'm the Number-One City! I'm King of the Mountain!" So why is the place deserted, a lair for wild animals? Passersby hardly give it a look; they dismiss it with a gesture.

BBE ©

This is the town which was full of joy, living without fear of danger, saying in her heart, I am, and there is no other: how has she been made waste, a place for beasts to take their rest in! everyone who goes by her will make hisses, waving his hand.

NRSV ©

Is this the exultant city that lived secure, that said to itself, "I am, and there is no one else"? What a desolation it has become, a lair for wild animals! Everyone who passes by it hisses and shakes the fist.

NKJV ©

This is the rejoicing city That dwelt securely, That said in her heart, "I am it , and there is none besides me." How has she become a desolation, A place for beasts to lie down! Everyone who passes by her Shall hiss and shake his fist.

tn Heb “this is the proud city.”

tn Heb “the one that lived securely.”

tn Heb “the one who says in her heart.”

tn Heb “I [am], and besides me there is no other.”

tn Heb “hisses”; or “whistles.”

sn Hissing (or whistling) and shaking the fist were apparently ways of taunting a defeated foe or an object of derision in the culture of the time.
