Mark 3:27

Context
NET ©

But no one is able to enter a strong man’s 1  house and steal his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can thoroughly plunder his house. 2

NIV ©

In fact, no-one can enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house.

NASB ©

"But no one can enter the strong man’s house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.

NLT ©

Let me illustrate this. You can’t enter a strong man’s house and rob him without first tying him up. Only then can his house be robbed!

MSG ©

Do you think it's possible in broad daylight to enter the house of an awake, able-bodied man, and walk off with his possessions unless you tie him up first? Tie him up, though, and you can clean him out.

BBE ©

But no one is able to go into the house of the strong man and take his goods, without first putting cords round the strong man, and then he will take his goods.

NRSV ©

But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.

NKJV ©

"No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.

NET © Notes

sn The strong man here pictures Satan.

sn Some see the imagery here as similar to Eph 4:7-10, although no opponents are explicitly named in that passage. Jesus has the victory over Satan. Jesus’ acts of healing mean that the war is being won and the kingdom is coming.
