It is written in the law: “By people with strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, yet not even in this way will they listen to me,” 1 says the Lord.
Although we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our servitude. He has extended kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, in that he has revived us 1 to restore the temple of our God and to raise 2 up its ruins and to give us a protective wall in Judah and Jerusalem. 3
Every day one ox, six select sheep, and some birds were prepared for me, and every ten days all kinds of wine in abundance. Despite all this I did not require the food allotted to the governor, for the work was demanding on this people.
God gives a man riches, property, and wealth so that he lacks nothing that his heart 1 desires, 2 yet God does not enable 3 him to enjoy 4 the fruit of his labor 5 – instead, someone else 6 enjoys 7 it! 8 This is fruitless and a grave misfortune. 9
They seek me day after day; they want to know my requirements, 1 like a nation that does what is right and does not reject the law of their God. They ask me for just decrees; they want to be near God.
She also saw 1 that I gave wayward Israel her divorce papers and sent her away because of her adulterous worship of other gods. 2 Even after her unfaithful sister Judah had seen this, 3 she still was not afraid, and she too went and gave herself like a prostitute to other gods. 4
The mother who had seven children 1 will grow faint. All the breath will go out of her. 2 Her pride and joy will be taken from her in the prime of their life. It will seem as if the sun had set while it was still day. 3 She will suffer shame and humiliation. 4 I will cause any of them who are still left alive to be killed in war by the onslaughts of their enemies,” 5 says the Lord.
“Son of man, say to the prince 1 of Tyre, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: “‘Your heart is proud 2 and you said, “I am a god; 3 I sit in the seat of gods, in the heart of the seas” – yet you are a man and not a god, though you think you are godlike. 4
“I sent against you a plague like one of the Egyptian plagues. 1 I killed your young men with the sword, along with the horses you had captured. I made the stench from the corpses 2 rise up into your nostrils. Still you did not come back to me.” The Lord is speaking!
I tell you, even though the man inside 1 will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of the first man’s 2 sheer persistence 3 he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we live, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we live. 1
“If men fight and hit a pregnant woman and her child is born prematurely, 1 but there is no serious injury, he will surely be punished in accordance with what the woman’s husband demands of him, and he will pay what the court decides. 2
