Why are your clothes red? Why do you look like someone who has stomped on grapes in a vat? 1
The Lord’s angelic messenger 1 came and sat down under the oak tree in Ophrah owned by Joash the Abiezrite. He arrived while Joash’s son Gideon 2 was threshing 3 wheat in a winepress 4 so he could hide it from the Midianites. 5
They captured the two Midianite generals, Oreb and Zeeb. 1 They executed Oreb on the rock of Oreb and Zeeb 2 in the winepress of Zeeb. They chased the Midianites 3 and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was now on the other side of the Jordan River. 4
“I have stomped grapes in the winepress all by myself; no one from the nations joined me. I stomped on them 1 in my anger; I trampled them down in my rage. Their juice splashed on my garments, and stained 2 all my clothes.
From his mouth extends a sharp sword, so that with it he can strike the nations. 1 He 2 will rule 3 them with an iron rod, 4 and he stomps the winepress 5 of the furious 6 wrath of God, the All-Powerful. 7
He replied, “No, let the Lord help you. How can I help you? The threshing floor and winepress are empty.” 1
You must supply them generously 1 from your flock, your threshing floor, and your winepress – as the Lord your God has blessed you, you must give to them.
“Listen to another parable: There was a landowner 1 who planted a vineyard. 2 He put a fence around it, dug a pit for its winepress, and built a watchtower. Then 3 he leased it to tenant farmers 4 and went on a journey.
He built a hedge around it, 1 removed its stones, and planted a vine. He built a tower in the middle of it, and constructed a winepress. He waited for it to produce edible grapes, but it produced sour ones instead. 2
ס (Samek) He rounded up 1 all my mighty ones; 2 The Lord 3 did this 4 in 5 my midst. He summoned an assembly 6 against me to shatter my young men. The Lord has stomped like grapes 7 the virgin daughter, Judah. 8
All the land will change and become like the Arabah 1 from Geba to Rimmon, 2 south of Jerusalem; and Jerusalem will be raised up and will stay in its own place from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate 3 and on to the Corner Gate, 4 and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses. 5
Joy and gladness will disappear from the fruitful land of Moab. 1 I will stop the flow of wine from the winepresses. No one will stomp on the grapes there and shout for joy. 2 The shouts there will be shouts of soldiers, not the shouts of those making wine. 3
