The enemies who chase me are numerous. 1 Yet I do not turn aside from your rules.
Moses and Aaron did so, 1 just as the Lord had commanded. Moses raised 2 the staff 3 and struck the water that was in the Nile right before the eyes 4 of Pharaoh and his servants, 5 and all the water that was in the Nile was turned to blood. 6
“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites, when he manifested such zeal 1 for my sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in my zeal. 2
You must not take for yourself anything that has been placed under judgment. 1 Then the Lord will relent from his intense anger, show you compassion, have mercy on you, and multiply you as he promised your ancestors.
Then he will not exalt himself above his fellow citizens or turn from the commandments to the right or left, and he and his descendants will enjoy many years ruling over his kingdom 1 in Israel.
if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commandments and statutes that are written in this scroll of the law. But you must turn to him 1 with your whole mind and being.
But they did not obey 1 their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped 2 them. They quickly turned aside from the path 3 their ancestors 4 had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the Lord’s commands, but they did not. 5
The rest 1 turned and ran toward the wilderness, heading toward the cliff of Rimmon. But the Israelites 2 caught 3 five thousand of them on the main roads. They stayed right on their heels 4 all the way to Gidom and struck down two thousand more.

When he turned around and saw them, he called God’s judgment down on them. 1 Two female bears came out of the woods and ripped forty-two of the boys to pieces.
No king before or after repented before the Lord as he did, with his whole heart, soul, and being in accordance with the whole law of Moses. 1
Even her mercenaries 1 will prove to be like pampered, 2 well-fed calves. For they too will turn and run away. They will not stand their ground when 3 the time for them to be destroyed comes, the time for them to be punished.
Just as it is written in the law of Moses, so all this calamity has come on us. Still we have not tried to pacify 1 the LORD our God by turning back from our sin and by seeking wisdom 2 from your reliable moral standards. 3
