And it could be said that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid a tithe through Abraham.
A priest of Aaron’s line 1 will be with the Levites when the Levites collect the tithes, and the Levites will bring up a tenth of the tithes to the temple of our God, to the storerooms of the treasury.
“You are to speak to the Levites, and you must tell them, ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe that I have given you from them as your inheritance, then you are to offer up 1 from it as a raised offering to the Lord a tenth of the tithe.
Then all of Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil to the storerooms.
When you finish tithing all 1 your income in the third year (the year of tithing), you must give it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows 2 so that they may eat to their satisfaction in your villages. 3
You must be certain to tithe 1 all the produce of your seed that comes from the field year after year.
The Israelites and people of Judah 1 who lived in the cities of Judah also contributed a tenth of their cattle and sheep, as well as a tenth of the holy items consecrated to the Lord their God. They brought them and placed them in many heaps. 2
We will also bring the first of our coarse meal, of our contributions, of the fruit of every tree, of new wine, and of olive oil to the priests at the storerooms of the temple of our God, along with a tenth of the produce 1 of our land to the Levites, for the Levites are the ones who collect the tithes in all the cities where we work. 2
At the end of every three years you must bring all the tithe of your produce, in that very year, and you must store it up in your villages.
and in one case tithes are received by mortal men, while in the other by him who is affirmed to be alive.
Thus you are to offer up a raised offering to the Lord of all your tithes which you receive from the Israelites; and you must give the Lord’s raised offering from it to Aaron the priest.
See, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they perform – the service of the tent of meeting.
“‘Any tithe 1 of the land, from the grain of the land or from the fruit of the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.
And those of the sons of Levi who receive the priestly office 1 have authorization according to the law to collect a tithe from the people, that is, from their fellow countrymen, 2 although they too are descendants of Abraham. 3
But I have given 1 to the Levites for an inheritance the tithes of the Israelites that are offered 2 to the Lord as a raised offering. That is why I said to them that among the Israelites they are to have no inheritance.”
