“Shout for joy, O barren one who has not given birth! Give a joyful shout and cry out, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate one are more numerous than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.
They seek me day after day; they want to know my requirements, 1 like a nation that does what is right and does not reject the law of their God. They ask me for just decrees; they want to be near God.
But you, Lord, know all their plots to kill me. Do not pardon their crimes! Do not ignore their sins as though you had erased them! 1 Let them be brought down in defeat before you! Deal with them while you are still angry! 2
Tell them the Lord who rules over all says, 1 ‘I will do just as Jeremiah has done. 2 I will smash this nation and this city as though it were a potter’s vessel which is broken beyond repair. 3 The dead will be buried here in Topheth until there is no more room to bury them.’ 4

When you present your sacrifices 1 – when you make your sons pass through the fire – you defile yourselves with all your idols to this very day. Will I allow you to seek me, 2 O house of Israel? As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, I will not allow you to seek me! 3
For this reason no watered trees will grow so tall; their tops will not reach into the clouds, nor will the well-watered ones grow that high. 1 For all of them have been appointed to die in the lower parts of the earth; 2 they will be among mere mortals, 3 with those who descend to the pit.
As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, my sheep have become prey and have become food for all the wild beasts. There was no shepherd, and my shepherds did not search for my flock, but fed themselves and did not feed my sheep,
There is a man in your kingdom who has within him a spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father, he proved to have 1 insight, discernment, and wisdom like that 2 of the gods. 3 King Nebuchadnezzar your father appointed him chief of the magicians, astrologers, wise men, and diviners. 4
Shortly after his rise to power, 1 his kingdom will be broken up and distributed toward the four winds of the sky 2 – but not to his posterity or with the authority he exercised, for his kingdom will be uprooted and distributed to others besides these.
For Jesus 1 had started commanding 2 the evil 3 spirit to come out of the man. (For it had seized him many times, so 4 he would be bound with chains and shackles 5 and kept under guard. But 6 he would break the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted 7 places.) 8
