For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts and their senseless hearts 1 were darkened.
I have great joy in the Lord because now at last you have again expressed your concern for me. (Now I know you were concerned before but had no opportunity to do anything.) 1
Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a pure and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil. And he still holds firmly 1 to his integrity, 2 so that 3 you stirred me up to destroy him 4 without reason.” 5
You may not eat any corpse, though you may give it to the resident foreigner who is living in your villages 1 and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. You are a people holy to the Lord your God. Do not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk. 2
David went out to meet them and said, 1 “If you come to me in peace and want to help me, then I will make an alliance with you. 2 But if you come to betray me to my enemies when I have not harmed you, 3 may the God of our ancestors 4 take notice and judge!”
Now, look, I have made every effort to supply what is needed to build the Lord’s temple. 1 I have stored up 100,000 talents 2 of gold, 1,000,000 3 talents of silver, and so much bronze and iron it cannot be weighed, as well as wood and stones. Feel free to add more!
In the twelfth month (that is, the month of Adar), on its thirteenth day, the edict of the king and his law were to be executed. It was on this day that the enemies of the Jews had supposed that they would gain power over them. But contrary to expectations, the Jews gained power over their enemies.
So now the Lord says, the one who formed me from birth 1 to be his servant – he did this 2 to restore Jacob to himself, so that Israel might be gathered to him; and I will be honored 3 in the Lord’s sight, for my God is my source of strength 4 –
She also saw 1 that I gave wayward Israel her divorce papers and sent her away because of her adulterous worship of other gods. 2 Even after her unfaithful sister Judah had seen this, 3 she still was not afraid, and she too went and gave herself like a prostitute to other gods. 4
Among the dead they have made a bed for her, along with all her hordes around her grave. 1 All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword, for their terror had spread in the land of the living. They bear their shame along with those who descend to the pit; they are placed among the dead.
By his treachery 1 he will succeed through deceit. 2 He will have an arrogant attitude, 3 and he will destroy many who are unaware of his schemes. 4 He will rise up against the Prince of princes, yet he will be broken apart – but not by human agency. 5
The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, 1 the God of our forefathers, 2 has glorified 3 his servant 4 Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected 5 in the presence of Pilate after he had decided 6 to release him.
