Then the Lord said to me, 1 “Tell them that the Lord God of Israel who rules over all 2 says, 3 ‘Drink this cup 4 until you get drunk and vomit. Drink until you fall down and can’t get up. 5 For I will send wars sweeping through you.’ 6
And all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon will use them as examples when they put a curse on anyone. They will say, “May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab whom the king of Babylon roasted to death in the fire!” 1
But when they came in and took possession of it, they did not obey you or live as you had instructed them. They did not do anything that you commanded them to do. 1 So you brought all this disaster on them.
‘The defenders of the city will go out and fight with the Babylonians. 1 But they will only fill those houses and buildings with the dead bodies of the people that I will kill in my anger and my wrath. 2 That will happen because I have decided to turn my back on 3 this city on account of the wicked things they have done. 4
ח (Khet) Jerusalem committed terrible sin; 1 therefore she became an object of scorn. 2 All who admired 3 her have despised her 4 because they have seen her nakedness. 5 She groans aloud 6 and turns away in shame. 7
ט (Tet) Her menstrual flow 1 has soiled 2 her clothing; 3 she did not consider 4 the consequences of her sin. 5 Her demise 6 was astonishing, 7 and there was no one to comfort her. She cried, “Look, 8 O Lord, on my 9 affliction because my
ר (Resh) Look, O Lord! I am distressed; 1 my stomach is in knots! 2 My heart is pounding 3 inside me. Yes, I was terribly rebellious! 4 Out in the street the sword bereaves a mother of her children; 5 Inside the house death is present. 6
It is sharpened for slaughter, it is polished to flash like lightning! “‘Should we rejoice in the scepter of my son? No! The sword despises every tree! 1
His power will be great, but it will not be by his strength alone. He will cause terrible destruction. 1 He will be successful in what he undertakes. 2 He will destroy powerful people and the people of the holy ones. 3
He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea to make the sea quiet down, 1 because I know it’s my fault you are in this severe storm.”
The shields of his warriors are dyed red; 1 the mighty soldiers are dressed in scarlet garments. 2 The metal fittings 3 of the chariots 4 shine like 5 fire 6 on the day of battle; 7 the soldiers brandish 8 their spears. 9
The one who says to wood, ‘Wake up!’ is as good as dead 1 – he who says 2 to speechless stone, ‘Awake!’ Can it give reliable guidance? 3 It is overlaid with gold and silver; it has no life’s breath inside it.
Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s angry judgment. The whole earth 1 will be consumed by his fiery wrath. 2 Indeed, 3 he will bring terrifying destruction 4 on all who live on the earth.” 5
before God’s decree becomes reality 1 and the day of opportunity disappears like windblown chaff, 2 before the Lord’s raging anger 3 overtakes 4 you – before the day of the Lord’s angry judgment overtakes you!
But this will be the nature of the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that have fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will decay while they stand on their feet, their eyes will rot away in their sockets, and their tongues will dissolve in their mouths.
