1 The Lord said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know are elders of the people and officials 2 over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting; let them take their position there with you.
But the Levites must perform the service 1 of the tent of meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. 2 It will be a perpetual ordinance throughout your generations that among the Israelites the Levites 3 have no inheritance. 4
These are the land assignments which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders 1 made by drawing lots in Shiloh before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 2 So they finished dividing up the land.

So the Philistines fought. Israel was defeated; they all ran home. 1 The slaughter was very great; thirty thousand foot soldiers fell in battle.
But those who were to camp in front of the tabernacle on the east, in front of the tent of meeting, were Moses, Aaron, 1 and his sons. They were responsible for the needs 2 of the sanctuary and for the needs of the Israelites, but the unauthorized person who approached was to be put to death.

The men whose names are listed came during the time of King Hezekiah of Judah and attacked the Hamites’ settlements, 1 as well as the Meunites they discovered there, and they wiped them out to this very day. They dispossessed them, 2 for they found pasture for their sheep there.
