Next, I noticed 1 six men 2 coming from the direction of the upper gate 3 which faces north, each with his war club in his hand. Among them was a man dressed in linen with a writing kit 4 at his side. They came and stood beside the bronze altar.
Say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Realize I am about to desecrate my sanctuary – the source of your confident pride, 1 the object in which your eyes delight, 2 and your life’s passion. 3 Your very own sons and daughters whom you have left behind will die 4 by the sword.
“‘But the Levitical priests, the descendants of Zadok 1 who kept the charge of my sanctuary when the people of Israel went astray from me, will approach me to minister to me; they will stand before me to offer me the fat and the blood, declares the sovereign Lord.
On both sides of the river’s banks, every kind of tree will grow for food. Their leaves will not wither nor will their fruit fail, but they will bear fruit every month, because their water source flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing.” 1
“Next to the border of Judah from the east side to the west will be the allotment you must set apart. It is to be eight and a quarter miles 1 wide, and the same length as one of the tribal portions, from the east side to the west; the sanctuary will be in the middle of it.
These will be the allotments for the holy portion: for the priests, toward the north eight and a quarter miles 1 in length, toward the west three and one-third miles 2 in width, toward the east three and one-third miles 3 in width, and toward the south eight and a quarter miles 4 in length; the sanctuary of the Lord will be in the middle.
Then I heard a holy one 1 speaking. Another holy one said to the one who was speaking, “To what period of time does the vision pertain – this vision concerning the daily sacrifice and the destructive act of rebellion and the giving over of both the sanctuary and army to be trampled?”
Now after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one will be cut off and have nothing. 1 As for the city and the sanctuary, the people of the coming prince will destroy 2 them. But his end will come speedily 3 like a flood. 4 Until the end of the war that has been decreed there will be destruction.
He will confirm a covenant with many for one week. 1 But in the middle of that week he will bring sacrifices and offerings to a halt. On the wing 2 of abominations will come 3 one who destroys, until the decreed end is poured out on the one who destroys.”
Let the priests, those who serve the Lord, weep from the vestibule all the way back to the altar. 1 Let them say, “Have pity, O Lord, on your people; please do not turn over your inheritance to be mocked, to become a proverb 2 among the nations. Why should it be said 3 among the peoples, “Where is their God?”
I saw the sovereign One 1 standing by the altar 2 and he said, “Strike the tops of the support pillars, 3 so the thresholds shake! Knock them down on the heads of all the people, 4 and I will kill the survivors 5 with the sword. No one will be able to run away; 6 no one will be able to escape. 7
All her carved idols will be smashed to pieces; all her metal cult statues will be destroyed by fire. 1 I will make a waste heap 2 of all her images. Since 3 she gathered the metal 4 as a prostitute collects her wages, the idols will become a prostitute’s wages again.” 5
But so that we don’t offend them, go to the lake and throw out a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth, you will find a four drachma coin. 1 Take that and give it to them for me and you.”
