The people to whom they are prophesying will die through war and famine. Their bodies will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem 1 and there will be no one to bury them. This will happen to the men and their wives, their sons, and their daughters. 2 For I will pour out on them the destruction they deserve.” 3
Then some people 1 said, “Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! 2 There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. 3 Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! 4 Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”
I will make myself available to you,’ 1 says the Lord. 2 ‘Then I will reverse your plight 3 and will regather you from all the nations and all the places where I have exiled you,’ says the Lord. 4 ‘I will bring you back to the place from which I exiled you.’
Because he has done this,” 1 the Lord says, “I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his whole family. There will not be any of them left to experience the good things that I will do for my people. I, the Lord, affirm it! For he counseled rebellion against the Lord.”’” 2
So I, the Lord, tell you not to be afraid, you descendants of Jacob, my servants. 1 Do not be terrified, people of Israel. For I will rescue you and your descendants from a faraway land where you are captives. 2 The descendants of Jacob will return to their land and enjoy peace. They will be secure and no one will terrify them. 3
Even now siege ramps have been built up around the city 1 in order to capture it. War, 2 starvation, and disease are sure to make the city fall into the hands of the Babylonians 3 who are attacking it. 4 Lord, 5 you threatened that this would happen. Now you can see that it is already taking place. 6
So you go there the next time all the people of Judah come in from their towns to fast 1 in the Lord’s temple. Read out loud where all of them can hear you what I told you the Lord said, which you wrote in the scroll. 2
Tell King Jehoiakim of Judah, ‘The Lord says, “You burned the scroll. You asked 1 Jeremiah, ‘How dare you write in this scroll that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land and wipe out all the people and animals on it?’” 2
Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “The Lord, the God who rules over all, the God of Israel, 1 says, ‘You must surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon. If you do, your life will be spared 2 and this city will not be burned down. Indeed, you and your whole family will be spared.
Then tell them, 1 ‘The Lord God of Israel who rules over all 2 says, “I will bring 3 my servant 4 King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I will set his throne over these stones which I 5 have buried. He will pitch his royal tent 6 over them.
I, the Lord, promise that 1 I will hand Pharaoh Hophra 2 king of Egypt over to his enemies who are seeking to kill him. I will do that just as surely as I handed King Zedekiah of Judah over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, his enemy who was seeking to kill him.’”
1 “You descendants of Jacob, my servants, 2 do not be afraid; do not be terrified, people of Israel. For I will rescue you and your descendants from the faraway lands where you are captives. 3 The descendants of Jacob will return to their land and enjoy peace. They will be secure and no one will terrify them.
Because you did that, I, the Lord, affirm that 1 a time is coming when I will make Rabbah, the capital city of Ammon, hear the sound of the battle cry. It will become a mound covered with ruins. 2 Its villages will be burned to the ground. 3 Then Israel will take back its land from those who took their land from them. I, the Lord, affirm it! 4

When they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you will reply, ‘Because of the report that has come. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand will be limp; everyone 1 will faint and every knee will be wet with urine.’ 2 Pay attention – it is coming and it will happen, declares the sovereign Lord.”

tell them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Look, I am about to take the branch of Joseph which is in the hand of Ephraim and the tribes of Israel associated with him, and I will place them on the stick of Judah, 1 and make them into one stick – they will be one in my hand.’ 2
When they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the design of the temple, its pattern, its exits and entrances, and its whole design – all its statutes, its entire design, and all its laws; write it all down in their sight, so that they may observe its entire design and all its statutes and do them.
young men in whom there was no physical defect and who were handsome, 1 well versed in all kinds of wisdom, well educated 2 and having keen insight, 3 and who were capable 4 of entering the king’s royal service 5 – and to teach them the literature and language 6 of the Babylonians. 7
