“‘Surely anything which a man permanently dedicates to the Lord 1 from all that belongs to him, whether from people, animals, or his landed property, must be neither sold nor redeemed; anything permanently dedicated is most holy to the Lord.
But you must offer a burnt offering as a pleasing aroma to the Lord, one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs one year old, all of them without blemish. 1
And every daughter who possesses an inheritance from any of the tribes of the Israelites must become the wife of a man from any family in her father’s tribe, so that every Israelite 1 may retain the inheritance of his fathers.
You complained among yourselves privately 1 and said, “Because the Lord hates us he brought us from Egypt to deliver us over to the Amorites so they could destroy us!
Look! I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the Lord my God told me to do, so that you might carry them out in 1 the land you are about to enter and possess.
Moreover, he must not accumulate horses for himself or allow the people to return to Egypt to do so, 1 for the Lord has said you must never again return that way.
Bless, O Lord, his goods, and be pleased with his efforts; undercut the legs 1 of any who attack him, and of those who hate him, so that they cannot stand.
The whole hill country 1 will be yours; though it is a forest, you can clear it and it will be entirely yours. 2 You can conquer the Canaanites, though they have chariots with iron-rimmed wheels and are strong.”
Look, I am putting a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece, and the ground around it 1 is dry, then I will be sure 2 that you will use me to deliver Israel, 3 as you promised.”
So now go and make a new cart. Get two cows that have calves and that have never had a yoke placed on them. Harness the cows to the cart and take their calves from them back to their stalls.
Then the cows went directly on the road to Beth Shemesh. They went along, mooing as they went; they turned neither to the right nor to the left. The leaders of the Philistines were walking along behind them all the way to the border of Beth Shemesh.
Then Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the one whom the Lord has chosen? Indeed, there is no one like him among all the people!” All the people shouted out, “Long live the king!”
