When the old prophet who had invited him to his house heard the news, 1 he said, “It is the prophet 2 who rebelled against the Lord. 3 The Lord delivered him over to the lion and it ripped him up 4 and killed him, just as the Lord warned him.” 5
But when I leave you, the Lord’s spirit will carry you away so I can’t find you. 1 If I go tell Ahab I’ve seen you, he won’t be able to find you and he will kill me. 2 That would not be fair, 3 because your servant has been a loyal follower of 4 the Lord from my youth.
The seventh time the servant 1 said, “Look, a small cloud, the size of the palm of a man’s hand, is rising up from the sea.” Elijah 2 then said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up the chariots and go down, so that the rain won’t overtake you.’” 3
So he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Say this to my master, the king, ‘I will give you everything you demanded at first from your servant, but I am unable to agree to this latest demand.’” 1 So the messengers went back and gave their report.
But King Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds he received from the Syrians 1 when he fought against King Hazael of Syria. 2 Jehu told his supporters, 3 “If you really want me to be king, 4 then don’t let anyone escape from the city to go and warn Jezreel.”
The king of Assyria was told, 1 “The nations whom you deported and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land, so he has sent lions among them. They are killing the people 2 because they do not know the requirements of the God of the land.”
You will report to Amariah the chief priest in all matters pertaining to the Lord’s law, and to Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the family of Judah, in all matters pertaining to the king. 1 The Levites will serve as officials before you. Confidently carry out your duties! 2 May the Lord be with those who do well!”
The Levites and all the men of Judah 1 did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each of them took his men, those who were on duty during the Sabbath as well as those who were off duty on the Sabbath. Jehoiada the priest did not release his divisions from their duties.
He also gave him a written copy of the law that had been disseminated 1 in Susa for their destruction so that he could show it to Esther and talk to her about it. He also gave instructions that she should go to the king to implore him and petition him on behalf of her people.
I, the Lord, affirm 1 that I am opposed to those prophets who dream up lies and report them. They are misleading my people with their reckless lies. 2 I did not send them. I did not commission them. They are not helping these people at all. 3 I, the Lord, affirm it!” 4
When they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you will reply, ‘Because of the report that has come. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand will be limp; everyone 1 will faint and every knee will be wet with urine.’ 2 Pay attention – it is coming and it will happen, declares the sovereign Lord.”
If you don’t inform me of the dream, there is only one thing that is going to happen to you. 1 For you have agreed among yourselves to report to me something false and deceitful 2 until such time as things might change. So tell me the dream, and I will have confidence 3 that you can disclose its interpretation.”
“I am against you!” declares 1 the Lord who commands armies: 2 “I will burn your chariots 3 with fire; 4 the sword will devour your young lions; 5 you will no longer prey upon the land; 6 the voices of your messengers 7 will no longer be heard.”
They said, “Cornelius the centurion, 1 a righteous 2 and God-fearing man, well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, 3 was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear a message 4 from you.”
For our reason for confidence 1 is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with pure motives 2 and sincerity which are from God 3 – not by human wisdom 4 but by the grace of God – we conducted ourselves in the world, and all the more 5 toward you.
Therefore, if I come, 1 I will call attention to the deeds he is doing 2 – the bringing of unjustified charges against us with evil words! And not being content with that, he not only refuses to welcome the brothers himself, but hinders the people who want to do so and throws them out of the church!
